Liftmaster Chain/Belt Drive Gear & Sprocket Diagnosis

If you have this type of garage door motor it is common after around 10 years for the gear and sprocket to fail.  If the gear within the motor wears down, the teeth of the primary gear are no longer engaging the worn worm (secondary) gear.  If you can hear your motor run but it is not working (and the emergency release cord has not been engaged), then you may need a new gear installed.  If the belt or chain has become very loose or fully disconnected from the motor head, the sprocket that turns the belt or chain may be wearing or completely snapped off.

Liftmaster Operators (All models) Safety Sensor Diagnosis

If your door will not close, or begins to close and re-opens it may be an issue with the safety eyes.  There are two safety eyes wired into the garage door motor.  One is located in the bottom corner of each side of the garage opening, on or near the vertical track, less than 6″ off the ground .  All makes and models of garage door openers post-1993 have safety sensors, also called photo eyes.  Their purpose is to prevent an automated door from closing on an obstruction.  If the safety sensors are misaligned, broken, or there is a poor wiring connection from the sensors to the motor, then the door will not close as a safety precaution.  Along with the door not closing, or reverting to the open position, the light bulb in the motor will flash on and off 10 times to help diagnose the problem.
